Frequently asked questions
What qualifications does it require?
The beams are designed so that everyone can use them. To ensure that the program/journey/beams matches the manager and team's needs, we offer a thorough sparring session.
Can I use Gurubeam if my team is really challenged?
We have successful experience running the program in really challenged teams. But it requires a good talk about what the challenges are. And why they are there. We uncover this in the initial sparring session. Then we decide together if the program/journey matches your needs.
Can we be multiple teams together?
You can use it in large departments or an entire company.
We'll design the course to fit in and create maximum value.

What is the optimal team size
The beams are designed for teams at 5-10 people. But teams with up to 50 people, have run it successfully.
It's alle about designing the process smartly. So you get the most out of it.
Often it's about thinking about dividing the department/large team into smaller teams/groups and then creating a common wrap-up.

For new or existing teams?
The program is suitable for both new and existing/old teams.
It can be a smart way to create coherence in a new team fast.
Either way, beside to take into account the size of the team, time, how well they know each other and the starting point of the team and manager.
This is what we uncover in the first planning conversation.

Is Gurubeam good for onboarding?
Gurubeam can be used for onboarding in several ways:
A) Brand new teams that need to get a strong collaboration going quickly. The process can be used to accelerate team formation so that the team has a significantly shorter time to performance.
B) Onboarding new team members into existing teams. In a very short period of time, the program gives new team members a deep understanding of the team, dynamics, disciplines and "who does what" while strengthening the existing team to better welcome new colleagues.

Do you offer live workshops?
Yes, sometimes we do live workshops.
Most often it's about helping a team get started with the process. Other times it's about building new beams in collaboration with customers.
For some, it provides a safe start and the manager can be a participant before he or she has to run the rest of the process themselves.
A workshop with a team also provides the opportunity for face-to-face coaching with the leader.

Could you help us run the beams?
Yes, we can, but only if that's the best solution.
We believe firmly in empowering leaders and teams to develop and in their own pace and by their own effort. But book a planning session with us, and we find the best solution.

Can we run the beams in our team meetings?
Yes, absolutely!
The more naturally integrated the beams are into your everyday life, the better. That way, it's easier to fit in without creating a feeling of extra busyness AND you'll develop a learning culture that you can stick to once you've completed the course.

Can I use Gurubeam with my agile/scrum team?
Yes. We have great experience with scrum teams running beams as part of their retrospective. In that way they honor the nature of retrospectives AND make the most of them, but creating a well defined structure and proven approach to constantly making the most of the team.
How much time does it take?
A bite is typically about 20 minutes including tasks for the team. A beam is made of 2-5 bites. It is designed to take around 60 minutes for a team of 5 people. More people more time, as the beam is 80% team tasks.
Most leaders like to prepare by going through the beam, printing or sending out the certificate and handouts. For most people 20 minutes will be enough.

What is the best way to use Gurubeam?
The most important thing is that you run the program/journey/beams in a way that the team gets the most out of it and fits in with your team's rhythm.
You can run one beam a week or one a month.
The most important thing is that you follow the methodology and make sure you put what you learn into action.
It is optimal to set aside time for a short checkin between the beams, to make sure that you use what you've learned and do what you agreed on.

Does it have to be the leader who runs theam beams/team sessions?
No.
Several teams run with someone other than the manager as the beammaster (the one who runs the process). This could be, for example:
And it works fine as long as the manager is also part of the process.

Done or run out of beams?
What do you do when you've completed the journey or all the Beams available at the moment?
Well, you could start by celebrating. It's a vanishingly small percentage of teams that even get the opportunity to go through such a program together.
Remember to look back on what you've learned and everything the process has done for the team.
Then you can start over. Not because you didn't do a good enough job in Round 1, but there's no doubt you'll learn something new in Round 2.

My team hates fluffy touchy-feely stuff! Can I use Gurubeam?
Good question. We have quite some examples of both leaders and teams that start out being very sceptical about Gurubeam and end up being very engaged and enthusiastic … and create quite remarkable improvements in their teams.
Does Gurubeam work with remote or hybrid teams?
Yes, Gurubeam works perfectly for remote or hybrid teams. You just have to share the screen when running the videopart of the beams. When running the beams hybrid, it's important that the ones participate remote has their camera on and is invited into the conversations as much as those in the room.
What if someone on the team gets emotional?
We rarely experience this as a problem. But whenever we work with people, there is a risk that someone gets really emotional. If that happens, you should pause what you are doing and find out if you should wait to continue until the emotions are back on track. There might be things that has to be addressed in another setting, before you can continue with the beam.
Can we use Gurubeam in a global organisation?
Yes. We work with several international multilingual companies and Gurubeam has passed the thorough IT security checks. And we develop new beams together with them.FAQ 1 description

Which new themes are you going to create beams about?
When we have planned the production of new beams we put them as "coming soon" on the website. That said, it does not mean, that we don't have other beams cooking.
